Embedded World 2025: Rohde & Schwarz and Ceva Pioneer World’s First Bluetooth® OTA UTP Test Solution, Set to Debut

Embedded World 2025: The next major update to the Bluetooth® standard is on the horizon, and it introduces a groundbreaking feature: the Unified Test Protocol (UTP) Test Mode for Bluetooth® Low Energy. This innovation complements existing testing methods while enabling over-the-air (OTA) controlled device testing , eliminating the need for wired connections between the tester and the device under test (DUT).

Rohde & Schwarz and Ceva have joined forces to create the world’s first test solution supporting this new mode. This pioneering development will make its debut at Embedded World 2025 in Nuremberg, Germany.

Simplifying Testing for Compact Devices

Traditionally, testing small and highly integrated Bluetooth® devices—such as wearables—has relied on the Direct Test Mode (DTM) , which requires a physical control cable between the tester and the DUT. However, encapsulated or compact devices often lack the space for such connections, making testing cumbersome or even impossible.

The Bluetooth® OTA UTP Test Mode addresses this challenge by allowing test control messages to be sent wirelessly. This advancement simplifies the testing process significantly, particularly for devices with limited accessibility.

Powered by Ceva’s Proven Bluetooth® Technology

At the heart of this solution lies Ceva-Waves Bluetooth® Low Energy IP , a robust platform designed to integrate low-power, reliable Bluetooth® connectivity into system-on-chip (SoC) designs. With billions of devices already powered by this technology across consumer, automotive, industrial, and smart home markets, Ceva’s IP has proven its reliability and scalability.

Tal Shalev, Vice President and General Manager of the Wireless IoT Business Unit at Ceva, highlighted the significance of this collaboration:
“Rohde & Schwarz has long been a leader in Bluetooth® testing, and their R&S CMW platform continues to set industry benchmarks. The introduction of the Bluetooth® OTA UTP Test Mode is a game-changer for testing next-generation Bluetooth® products, and we’re proud to power this innovation with our Ceva-Waves Bluetooth® technology.”

Unified Testing with the R&S CMW Platform

The R&S CMW radio communication tester platform from Rohde & Schwarz now supports the new Bluetooth® OTA UTP Test Mode, thanks to the integration of Ceva’s radio-based controlling software. This unified solution enables all Bluetooth® Low Energy and Classic Radio measurements to be performed wirelessly using a single test setup.

Key benefits include:

  • Comprehensive Automation : Ensures precise compliance with Bluetooth® specifications.
  • High Accuracy : Delivers reliable results for development, pre-conformance, and production testing.
  • Future-Proof Compatibility : Supports existing Direct Test Mode (DTM) and aligns with the upcoming Bluetooth® release, including Release 6.0 Channel Sounding.

Christoph Pointner, Senior Vice President for Mobile Radio Testers at Rohde & Schwarz, emphasized the importance of this milestone:
“Our collaboration with Ceva has allowed us to implement the new Bluetooth® UTP Test Mode in line with the latest specifications. This solution empowers manufacturers to conduct over-the-air testing with ease, ensuring compatibility across all Bluetooth® radios using a single setup.”

A Step Toward Smarter Connectivity

Both Rohde & Schwarz and Ceva are actively involved in shaping the future of Bluetooth® standards through their participation in the Bluetooth® Core Specification Working Group. Their joint efforts ensure that this test solution not only meets current requirements but also anticipates future advancements in wireless technology.Embedded World 2025
