Transitioning from GSM-R to FRMCS
With the current Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R) slated for retirement by 2030, the industry is rapidly shifting towards FRMCS , a future-ready communication standard designed to support high-speed data transfer, advanced automation, and enhanced safety features. VIAVI’s cutting-edge tools — including EVOIA Drive Test and EVOIA Assure — will be instrumental in deploying and assessing FRMCS networks across both lab and live track environments.
These solutions will help ensure compliance with evolving railway requirements such as:
- Support for European Train Control System (ETCS)

About the MORANE-2 Project
Spanning from 2024 to 2027 , the MORANE-2 initiative is a collaborative effort funded by Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (EU-RAIL) and the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking . The project’s primary goal is to establish robust product development standards and facilitate the inclusion of FRMCS specifications within the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) — the benchmark for safe, efficient, and interoperable European rail systems.
This transition will enhance not only railway efficiency and safety , but also support sustainability goals and digital connectivity across the continent.
