Infineon Technologies Unveils EZ-USB FX20: A High Performance USB Peripheral Controller for AI and Image Processing Applications

This new release from Infineon promises to be a game-changer for developers working on high-performance applications

Infineon Technologies AG has announced the introduction of the EZ-USB FX20, a new programmable USB peripheral controller, expanding its EZ-USB product family. This latest addition is designed to enable developers to build USB devices that meet high-performance demands in fields like AI, image processing, and other emerging applications. The EZ-USB FX20 offers 20 Gbps USB connectivity and LVDS interfaces, boosting total bandwidth by up to six times compared to its predecessor, the EZ-USB FX3.

Ganesh Subramaniam, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Wired Connectivity Solutions Product Line at Infineon, emphasized the growing demand for adaptable USB controllers. “As USB devices become more popular, the need for compatible and flexible controllers increases. We’re continuously improving the performance and features of our EZ-USB controllers, and we are pleased to offer developers this new solution for creating advanced applications.”

Key Features and Benefits

The EZ-USB FX20 is compact, housed in a 10 x 10 mm² BGA package, which minimizes the PCB space required, making it ideal for space-constrained applications. This compact design also optimizes the bill of materials (BOM). Additionally, the controller supports direct USB-C connectivity without needing a high-speed signal multiplexer, simplifying the design process. A quick-start development kit is included, which provides firmware and configuration tools for seamless integration.

The development kit comes equipped with a standard FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) connector for easy attachment to Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) cards, as well as an all-in-one programming and debugging accessory card. To streamline the design process, the EZ-USB FX20 offers a full set of application notes for both hardware and software development, assisting developers in creating high-performance devices across a range of applications.

Technical Specifications

The EZ-USB FX20 is powered by two CPUs: ARM Cortex-M4 and M0+ cores. It features 512 KB of Flash memory, 128 KB of SRAM, 128 KB of ROM, and seven Serial Communication Blocks (SCBs). The controller also includes a cryptography accelerator and a high-bandwidth data subsystem that enables Direct Memory Access (DMA) transfers between LVDS/LVCMOS and USB ports at speeds of up to 20 Gbps. An additional 1 MB of SRAM is available for USB data buffering.

The EZ-USB FX20 also simplifies design by integrating USB-C port orientation detection and flip-mux functionality, eliminating the need for external logic. With these advanced features, the EZ-USB FX20 provides developers with a powerful and versatile solution for building next-generation USB devices.

Availability

The EZ-USB FX20 peripheral controller, in its 10 x 10 mm² BGA package, is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2025, with development samples currently available.
