Infineon Technologies Unveils XENSIV™ PAS CO2 5V Sensor to Enhance Building Energy Efficiency
Infineon Launches XENSIV™ PAS CO2 5V Sensor for Optimized Energy Efficiency and Air Quality Management
To support the ongoing efforts in decarbonization, enhancing energy efficiency in buildings is essential, as they contribute significantly to global energy use and carbon emissions. Innovative solutions are required to optimize energy consumption while maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Addressing this need, Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the XENSIV™ PAS CO2 5V sensor, a device based on Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (PAS) technology. This sensor helps improve energy efficiency by adjusting ventilation systems based on real-time occupancy, ultimately reducing the carbon footprint of buildings. Its versatile applications include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as room controllers and thermostats in both commercial and residential settings. It can also be integrated into IoT devices, such as smart lighting, air purifiers, conferencing systems, and smart speakers, and into emerging technologies like smart horticulture and smart refrigerators.
“Environmental sensing is a key focus of Infineon’s sensor portfolio,” said Andreas Kopetz, VP of Ambient Sensing at Infineon. “CO2 sensors are increasingly vital in smart homes and buildings, continuously monitoring indoor air quality and adjusting ventilation systems to optimize efficiency. Our XENSIV PAS CO2 5V sensor not only ensures a healthier living environment but also enables significant energy savings for greater sustainability.”
Improved Energy Efficiency and Versatile Applications
The XENSIV PAS CO2 5V sensor provides real-time air quality data, featuring a compact form factor of 14×13.8×7.5 mm³, identical to its predecessor, the XENSIV PAS CO2 12V sensor. This makes it easy for manufacturers to adopt dual designs or maintain a consistent design strategy across both versions. The main difference is the 5V sensor’s simplified power supply, which makes installation easier and reduces complexity.
A key improvement is the faster response time, which has been reduced from 90 seconds (in the 12V version) to 55 seconds in the 5V model. This enhancement allows quicker data acquisition, making the sensor more responsive in dynamic environments. Its dust-proof design in accordance with ISO 20653:2013-02 ensures long-term durability, especially in dusty conditions, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
Seamless Integration and Advanced Features
The XENSIV PAS CO2 5V sensor is equipped with UART, I²C, and PWM interfaces, allowing easy integration with microcontrollers and digital systems, making the design and development process simpler. Its robust performance meets the criteria of the internationally recognized WELL™ Green Building Standard, contributing to both environmental sustainability and increased property value.
Infineon developed all key components of the sensor in-house, ensuring high quality standards. A dedicated microcontroller runs advanced compensation algorithms, providing accurate CO2 readings in parts per million (ppm). The sensor offers versatile configuration options, including Automatic Baseline Offset Calibration (ABOC), pressure compensation, signal alarms, sample rate adjustments, and early measurement notifications, which are valuable for power consumption management. The sensor’s SMD package is designed for easy assembly in high-speed, high-volume manufacturing environments, thanks to its tape and reel delivery.
