Microchip Technology Secures Functional Safety Certification from TÜV Rheinland

Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has successfully obtained Functional Safety certification from TÜV Rheinland®, an independent testing and certification organization. This achievement will help hardware and system developers working on safety-critical applications in industries such as automotive and industrial sectors accelerate their compliance with IEC 61508 SIL 3 and ISO 26262 ASIL D standards. The certification applies to Microchip’s Libero® SoC Design Suite 2023.2 SP1, which is compatible with the PolarFire® FPGA and SoC families.

The functional safety package provided by Microchip offers essential design flows, documentation, and certifications to reduce risks and shorten time to market for customers. By using pre-certified tools and methodologies, engineers can simplify the process of certification while ensuring compliance with strict industry safety requirements. While system failures cannot be completely prevented, the implementation of functional safety measures can significantly reduce risks, making failures less hazardous.

“Microchip recognizes the challenges designers face in mission-critical and safety-critical applications,” said Shakeel Peera, Vice President of Marketing and Strategy for Microchip’s FPGA business unit. “By partnering with TÜV Rheinland to achieve certification for IEC 61508 SIL 3 and ISO 26262 ASIL D standards, we are providing an easier path to compliance. The certified functional safety package in our Libero IDE and our FPGA and SoC families also offers the power-efficiency, reliability, and security inherent to the PolarFire FPGA and SoC architecture.”

The functional safety package allows developers to harness the full potential of the PolarFire FPGA family, which delivers industry-leading thermal and power efficiency in the mid-range segment, consuming up to 50% less power compared to competing devices.
