Nexperia Introduces New AC/DC Flyback Controllers for GaN-Based Power Converters

Nexperia: The controllers use TSOT23-6 flip-chip packaging, which improves thermal management & minimizes the risk of accidental activation

Nexperia has launched a new series of AC/DC flyback controllers as part of its expanding power IC portfolio. The newly introduced models—NEX806xx/NEX808xx and NEX8180x—are designed to enhance the performance of GaN-based flyback converters used in applications such as power delivery (PD) chargers, adapters, wall and strip sockets, industrial power systems, and other AC/DC conversion solutions requiring high power density.

Controller Specifications and Capabilities

  • NEX806xx/NEX808xx:
These are quasi-resonant/multi-mode flyback controllers with a wide VCC operating range from 10V to 83V.
    • Key Use: Optimizes current sensing and pulse frequency modulation (PFM) to achieve high efficiency across various load levels.
    • Compatibility: These controllers can drive both silicon MOSFETs and GaN high-electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) directly, which improves power density.
  • NEX81801/NEX81802:
These models serve as adaptive synchronous rectifier (SR) controllers.
    • Adaptive Control: The SR controllers feature a mis-conduction prevention mechanism, enhancing the reliability of the switching device and reducing operational risks.
    • Use Case: These controllers are ideal for working with Nexperia’s NEX52xxx PD controllers and other discrete power components, offering an integrated, high-efficiency solution for flyback converters.

Thermal Performance and Protective Features

The new flyback controllers use TSOT23-6 flip-chip packaging, which improves thermal management and minimizes the risk of accidental activation of over-temperature protection (OTP). This design ensures better heat dissipation, making the controllers well-suited for high-power applications.

In addition, the integrated protection mechanisms safeguard devices from faults, making these controllers highly reliable for consumer electronics and industrial power supplies.

Key Benefits of Nexperia’s Flyback Controllers

  1. High Efficiency Across Loads: These controllers optimize power efficiency even during standby mode, ensuring reduced power loss.
  2. Seamless Integration: They work seamlessly with GaN or silicon-based transistors, enabling manufacturers to achieve greater power density.
  3. System Reliability: The adaptive control method in the SR controllers minimizes switching errors, improving reliability.
  4. Enhanced Thermal Management: The flip-chip design boosts thermal performance, extending the lifespan of the power system.
