We open AOL Mail, we enter our password, and the page gets stuck on a verification screen or returns a generic error. The usual reflex (clearing the cache, trying again) is not always enough. The actual causes of an AOL login blockage are often more specific than just a browser issue, and resolving them requires checking several points in a logical order.
AOL Security Checks: Why the Account Gets Blocked Even Before Login
Since the acquisition of AOL by the Italian company Bending Spoons, which filed for an IPO on Nasdaq in 2025, security mechanisms have been strengthened. There has been an increase in screens saying “Security verification in progress” that appear even before entering the password.

This blockage does not mean that the account is compromised. It triggers when AOL detects a connection via a VPN, a proxy, or a browser that systematically deletes cookies. Disabling the VPN before connecting to AOL resolves the issue in most cases.
If using a corporate network or public Wi-Fi, local network filtering can also cause this blockage. A quick test: switch to the phone’s 4G/5G connection. If the login page displays normally, the problem lies with the network, not the account. Knowing how to fix an AOL connection issue starts with this distinction between network blockage and account blockage.

AOL Password Denied: Resetting and Application Password
The classic scenario: we are sure of the password, but AOL denies it. Two situations lie behind this symptom.
Correct Password but Rejected on Webmail
AOL may invalidate a password after several failed attempts or after a long period of account inactivity. The reset procedure goes through the AOL recovery page, which sends a code to the phone number or backup email address associated with the account.
If this recovery information is no longer up to date (old number, deleted secondary address), recovering the account becomes significantly more complicated. You may face a manual identity verification form with varying response times.
Password Denied in Third-Party Mail Client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Gmail)
This is a common trap. The standard AOL password no longer works for POP or IMAP connections since two-step verification became widespread. You need to generate an application password from the security settings of the AOL account and then use this specific password in the mail client.
The procedure:
- Log in to AOL via the browser, access the account security settings, then go to the “Generate an application password” section
- Select the type of application (mail client, calendar) and copy the generated password
- Replace the old password in the mail client with this new code, without spaces
A user on the Google Support forum reported the error “pop.aol.com does not allow messages to be kept on the server” when trying to retrieve their AOL emails via Gmail. This message appears when the POP settings are misconfigured or when the application password is not used.
IMAP and POP Synchronization Error with AOL Mail
When AOL emails no longer synchronize in a third-party client, the problem rarely comes from the client itself. First, check that the server settings match exactly the values expected by AOL.
- Incoming IMAP server: imap.aol.com, port 993, SSL/TLS encryption
- Incoming POP server: pop.aol.com, port 995, SSL/TLS encryption
- Outgoing SMTP server: smtp.aol.com, port 465, SSL/TLS encryption
- Username: the full AOL address (with @aol.com)
A common mistake is entering the username without the domain. AOL requires the full address. Another source of blockage: some older mail clients do not properly handle TLS 1.2 or higher, and AOL then refuses the connection without a clear error message.
Feedback varies on this point, but switching from a POP connection to IMAP often resolves partial synchronization issues, where only old emails appear without new ones downloading.

AOL Filters and Settings Blocking Email Reception
We receive our emails on the AOL webmail but not in the third-party client, or conversely, some senders seem to never arrive. Before suspecting a technical problem, two AOL settings deserve a check.
The first: the option “Block all senders except contacts” in the mail settings. If checked, any email from an address not in the contact list is silently deleted. No spam folder, no notification. We think it’s a bug when it’s actually an active filter.
The second: manually created custom filters. A misconfigured filter can redirect messages to the trash or a specific folder without us noticing. They can be found in the AOL mail settings, under the “Filters” section. Temporarily disabling all filters allows for quick isolation of the cause.
For delivery delays, AOL specifies that messages may be delayed due to server or internet routing issues without the sender or recipient receiving an alert. If an expected email does not arrive after several hours, requesting a resend remains the most reliable solution.
AOL connection issues are almost always resolved by elimination: network, then password, then server settings, then filters. Each layer eliminated brings you closer to the real cause, and in most cases, the blockage lies in the first two points.
