Rohde & Schwarz Highlights Innovative Power Electronics Testing Solutions at PCIM Expo 2025

At PCIM Expo 2025 in Nuremberg, Germany, Rohde & Schwarz will present its latest portfolio of test and measurement solutions designed for the evolving needs of power electronics development. Visitors to booth 166 in Hall 7 will discover a range of advanced tools specifically engineered to support the analysis and validation of next-generation wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technologies such as gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC).

With increasing demands on performance, efficiency, and reliability in sectors like electric mobility, renewable energy systems, and AI-driven data centers, robust testing and characterization have become essential for power engineers. From May 6–8, 2025, Rohde & Schwarz will demonstrate how its instruments enable precise evaluation of high-speed switching behavior, thermal stability, and overall system performance.

Advanced WBG Device Analysis

The centerpiece of the exhibition setup will be the R&S RT-ZISO isolated probing system , a groundbreaking solution tailored for accurate measurements in SiC and GaN-based designs. This high-precision probe delivers unmatched dynamic range, sensitivity, and bandwidth, addressing key challenges in measuring high-voltage switching signals. A live demonstration will illustrate the benefits of using R&S RT-ZISO over traditional single-ended probes when analyzing the switching dynamics of GaN-MosFETs.

Double Pulse Testing Made Reliable

Double pulse testing is vital for assessing the switching characteristics of WBG devices under real-world conditions. In collaboration with PE-Systems GmbH, Rohde & Schwarz will present a highly stable double pulse test configuration utilizing the MXO 5 oscilloscope —featuring eight channels—and the R&S RT-ZISO . At the event, attendees will see this setup in action on 1200 V SiC devices from Wolfspeed, commonly found in automotive traction inverters.

Accelerating Loadjump Testing Through Automation

Traditionally a manual and time-intensive process, loadjump testing can now be fully automated. With software from PE-Systems GmbH, along with the MXO 5 oscilloscope and R&S RT-ZISO , Rohde & Schwarz offers a streamlined solution that significantly cuts testing duration while enabling more detailed data collection across a wide voltage range. At PCIM, the joint solution will be demonstrated on a Monolithic Power Systems Buck converter , covering input voltages from 6V to 60V. Optional integration with temperature control allows for broader environmental condition testing.

Comprehensive Component Characterization

In addition to system-level tests, Rohde & Schwarz will present instruments for detailed component characterization. The R&S LCX LCR meters , equipped with specialized impedance functions, are ideal for evaluating passive components up to 10 MHz. These tools allow engineers to analyze parameters such as voltage-dependent capacitance in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), critical elements in power converters.

For deeper impedance spectroscopy, the MFIA impedance analyzer from Zurich Instruments AG—a Rohde & Schwarz subsidiary since 2021—offers precision measurements across a wide impedance range. It supports frequency and time-domain analyses and includes built-in oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer capabilities.

Dr. Philipp Weigell, Vice President of the Industry, Components, Research & University Market Segment at Rohde & Schwarz, commented:
“PCIM provides a crucial platform for us to showcase our innovations in WBG semiconductor testing. As industries strive for higher efficiency and compact power conversion systems—particularly in data centers and e-mobility—precise and reliable test solutions are indispensable. By partnering with leading experts and leveraging our advanced instrumentation, we empower customers to build high-performance, thermally efficient, and dependable power systems.”
